Tutors
Learning to play brass instruments is fun, but it’s way easier if you have an expert to guide you. This is a page listing of brass band tutors in the Christchurch area who you may wish to contact if you want to take your learning to the next level. Prices will vary between tutors and although we do try to keep this page up to date, any prices shown should be seen to be indicative only - expect to pay about the same as you might pay any other skilled tradesperson for their time and you won’t be too far wrong.
Alex Morton
Christchurch Central, Studio 9 at The Piano
I am a professional horn player, conductor and performance coach with an abundance of top level experience across Australia and New Zealand. As a teacher, I am passionate about ensuring my students are set up with the best fundamentals right from the very beginning and that they enjoy their musical journey. Brass playing should be easy, and making music should be fun. If these goals resonate with you, then please don't hesitate to get in touch for lessons today.
I am a competent teacher across all brass instruments from absolute beginner to professional.
Vickie Van Uden
Nothing beats the buzz of brass — it’s loud, it’s proud, and it’s a whole lot of fun (and yes, the neighbours will cope). I’m a professional brass player specialising in cornet, trumpet, and flugelhorn, with years of top-level experience across New Zealand and the UK. From concert halls to bandstands (and the occasional soggy parade), I’ve blown my fair share of brass!
As a teacher, my mission is simple: set you up with solid fundamentals, help you sound great, and make sure you have a blast along the way. Brass playing should feel easy — it's about air not acrobatics!
Whether you’re just starting out or already tooting away like a pro, I’ll bring the energy, humour, and know-how to help you shine. Let’s make music that’s bold, brilliant, and downright fun.
Qualified to degree level, I teach all brass instruments — from absolute beginners to future virtuosos (and everyone in between). So go on — pick up a brass instrument and join the fun. Your neighbours will love it. Eventually.

Between 2012 - 2024, Raynor was a full-time musician with the New Zealand Army Band. In his role, he has had the honour of performing the Last Post at the centennial commemorations of the Somme and Passchendaele battles and has shared the stage with many of New Zealand’s top artists.
