Annual Matuku Sumner Community Carols 2025

This evening the Sumner Silver Band had the pleasure of performing at the annual Matuku Sumner Community Carols, a much-loved local event that brings families, neighbours, and Christmas spirit together in one place. With the sun setting over Sumner and a steady crowd gathering, we opened the night with a selection of upbeat pieces to set a festive, welcoming atmosphere as people arrived, found their seats, and settled in for an evening of music.

A special highlight early in the programme featured our local young brass learners. These budding musicians proudly performed Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree and Jingle Bells, earning warm applause from the community. Their enthusiasm is a reminder of why we support and encourage the next generation of brass players, and it was heartening to see so many families cheering them on.

The band then invited the audience to join us in singing a range of well-known Christmas carols. Voices from all corners of the reserve joined together, creating that unmistakable feeling of community that makes this event so special. The sense of togetherness only grew when the Matuku Theatre Group took the stage with a lively performance that delighted the crowd and added storytelling flair to the evening.

As the night drew to a close, we welcomed a very special guest, Santa, who surprised everyone by joining the band for a fun and festive rendition of All I Want for Christmas Is You. His appearance brought huge smiles, excited waves from the kids, and plenty of laughter from the adults too. It was the perfect way to wrap up a joyful night of music, connection, and community celebration.

A huge thank-you to the Matuku community, the organisers, the Theatre Group, our young brass players, and everyone who came along to sing, clap, and share the Christmas spirit with us. We look forward to returning next year for another magical evening in Sumner.
