Ferrymead Heritage Park as part of the commemoration of the 175th anniversary Dec. 2025

The Sumner Silver Band was proud to perform at Ferrymead Heritage Park as part of the commemoration of the 175th anniversary of the arrival of the first four ships into Lyttelton, marking a significant moment in Canterbury’s history.

As visitors arrived and explored the park, the band opened the day with light background music, creating a welcoming atmosphere among the historic buildings and heritage displays. The programme then moved into a formal fanfare, leading into speeches from Christchurch City Councillors and the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem, anchoring the event in both ceremony and reflection.

Following the official proceedings, the band presented a varied programme that reflected both the historic setting and the broad audience in attendance. Familiar favourites such as Cherry Pink and Bring Me Sunshine brought warmth and nostalgia, while reflective moments were provided through pieces like 1914 and the much-loved Māori lullaby Hine e Hine. With the festive season close at hand, Christmas selections including Merry Christmas Everyone and I’ll Be Home for Christmas added a seasonal touch that was warmly received by the crowd.

After a short break, the band was delighted to support the Morris Dancers that added colour and movement to the afternoon. The wider celebration featured a rich variety of attractions, including the Canterbury Early Settlers Society, traction engines, train and tram rides, vintage cars and penny farthings, costumed characters, heritage demonstrations, and traditional old-fashioned games, offering entertainment for all ages.

The performance concluded on a high note with upbeat and familiar favourites such as Bohemian Rhapsody, All I Want for Christmas Is You, and Feliz Navidad, bringing smiles, toe-tapping, and a strong sense of celebration to close the day.

It was a privilege to be part of such a meaningful and well-supported event, celebrating Canterbury’s history through music, community, and shared heritage.
