Teddy Bear’s Picnic Scarborough Park March 2026

Teddy Bears’ Picnic at Scarborough Park – A Perfect Sumner Afternoon
🙏Thank you to all those that came to listen and show their support!

Sunday afternoon delivered everything we could have hoped
for: sunshine, sea breeze, and a fantastic community turnout for the Teddy Bears’ Picnic at Scarborough Park in Sumner. Families arrived with picnic rugs, baskets, and of course, their beloved teddy bears, filling the grass with colour, laughter, and plenty of cuddles.
The Sumner Silver Band set the scene with a beautiful Concert by the Sea, drawing crowds who settled in to enjoy an afternoon of music and family fun. Tamariki were kept busy with teddy‑bear colouring sheets, a very popular “Cuddly Care Clinic” where they dressed up as doctors to bandage their bears, and a lively teddy bear parade. Certificates were awarded for Best Dressed Bear and Most Cuddly Bear, much to everyone’s delight.
Musically, the afternoon was rich with talent. Soloists shone
throughout the programme, including:
🎺Chris Hollis‑Locke with a gorgeous rendition of 🎶 The Lazy Trumpeter
💐 James Upton performing the classic Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White
👩‍🍼 Robyn Porter offering a gentle lullaby for the teddy bears with First Light by Ben Hollings on baritone horn
🎸Sylvia Duncan, who wowed the audience on bass guitar during Skyfall, alongside principal trombonist Geoffrey Wheeler
🎷Jenny Bartley, whose expressive performance of Piazzolla’s
Oblivion on saxophone added a beautifully atmospheric moment to the afternoon
🥁Holding everything together with steady rhythm and decades of dedication was life member Colin Lyons on percussion—an anchor of the Sumner Silver Band and a true testament to commitment and musicianship.

As the sun dipped lower, we closed the afternoon with our
signature showstopper: Bohemian Rhapsody, sending the crowd off buzzing and smiling.
The scenic seaside setting, the joyful atmosphere, and the
shared sense of community made it a truly memorable day. A perfect way to while away a Sunday afternoon in Sumner.

The Nick Richardson Fan Club were out in force!

Teddy bear repairs sponsored by Sumner Health Centre.

A glorious day for a playout in the park!
